Gabriel's 2 Worlds: 2018 gets off to a good start

Gabriel's 2 Worlds

January proved to be a busy and monumental month for Probitas 1492, and particularly me.

It feels so good to be writing my first blog of the year in our new offices, looking out over Mexico City. After months of work and dedication, we finally launched our Latin American hub. It’s so gratifying for me given the tremendous effort in making in happen. It means even more to me, given that Mexico City is my hometown.

I’m really proud to have been part of the historical achievement of being the first Lloyd’s syndicate in Mexico. There are so many opportunities for us in the region, and whilst the physical office is in Mexico City, we really do see this as our base for the wider region.

January also saw the new team here, Roberto Gómez, Jocelyn Naranjo and Lorena Solis travel across the Atlantic to visit the London office and meet the Probitas family. It was a whirlwind fortnight for them, as they had barely a minute between meetings and training. I don’t think any of us realised just how much information that would be shared during their visit.

Despite the cold and rainy weather, they did get to enjoy some of the sights of London and Paris. It was an unforgettable experience to live and work for two weeks in such an iconic city. And, particularly to experience the Lloyd’s market for themselves.

I speak for the team when I say that they were excited to return to Mexico and get to work as part of the Probitas family.

It was a really encouraging to see how aligned the team are with the wider Probitas team. And, it’s clear that we’re on the right foot to establish a robust extension of the syndicate – and not an independent silo.
Back at our desks in Mexico City, we’re all systems go!

The news of our official opening has been well received, and we’re looking forward to further developing our relationships here and in the wider LatAm region. The reinsurance market knows and trusts the team here, and we have great relationships already with brokers and insurance companies, which means we’re already seeing a steady flow of proposals.

Our initial focus is on facultative casualty and property reinsurance. We will also be looking at construction risks, renewable energy, contractors and mobile equipment, working closely with the expert team in London.

And, on the casualty side, in addition to General Liability, we will consider commercial D&O, and working closely with our London based Financial Lines team to develop the Financial Institutions book.

We are also planning to work with a select group of brokers and cedents, where there is a strategic alignment, to develop treaty opportunities.

Our ambitions are high and we’re relishing our presence in Latin America. The future looks bright and we’re excited for what is to come.

2018 has got off to a tremendous start for Probitas Mexico!
